Asteroid 2012 DA14

Asteroid 2012 DA14 is a near Earth asteroid. On 15th February 2013, the asteroid will come as close as 27,680 km from Earth which is less than four Earth radius. The size of the rocky asteroid is approximately of a football ground (about 45m) and it will go at a speed of 8km/s near Earth. The distance 27,680 km is closer than many communication and weather satellites.

The estimated mass of the asteroid is about 130,000 metric tons.

The asteroid is discovered by the LaSagra observatory in southern Spain on February 23, 2012, a week later, when it passed close to Earth at a distance of 1.6 million kms..

Scientists confirmed that the Earth is safe as there is no chance of an impact by this incoming asteroid.

The next close approach of 2012 DA14 will be on February 16, 2046 when it will pass no closer than 60,000 km, from the centre of the Earth.
